1 〈先端〉 the point （of a pencil）； the tip （of a finger）； the end （of a stick）

さおの先 the end of a pole
先がとがっている be sharp ［pointed］ at the end
文例
尾の先が房になっている. The tail ends in a tuft.
2 〈先頭〉 the front； the head； the lead
句例
先に立つ be in the front ［《形式》 van］ （of the parade）； take the lead 《in》
先に立って歩く walk at the head （of a procession） ［ahead of 《others》］； lead the way
